Missed a Week but dont Worry now its Double the Playlist

My apologies on missing a week, things got in the way, but regardless, our last two shows marked the end of our country special shows. First with Denmark and this last week with Sweden. Denmark showed us some wonderful folktronica if you will, and really let us showcase some music that rarely is heard outside of the region. While this lasts weeks show featuring Sweden was filled with some of the most amazing cutesy pop including the Acid House Kings and the always wonderful Jens Lekman. Let me make note that this was Rachel's last show and that she will be deeply missed. But the show must go on and next week will be the last week of Skandinavi for this quarter and possibly forever. So you should all definitely listen in and give some requests , next week will be a Skandinavi free for all. Listen in next tues 5-6pm kcpr.org

Norwegian Featured Artist: Rockettothesky

Hello All,
Choosing a featured artist from Norway proved to be pretty difficult, but are finally choosing to feature Rockettothesky! We included a video from her a couple weeks back, and I can't seem to get enough... So here's some more info!
Jenny Hval makes up the band for the most part, with occasional guests and backup instrumentals. Her latest album, Medea is by far one of my favorite albums of the year. This album gives off somewhat of an ethereal/atmospheric sort of vibe, paired with her amazing vocals which never cease to amaze me. Absolutely gorgeous and eerie, it's a great combination.

A little self-description:
"Rockettothesky, AKA Jenny Hval, AKA me, is a one-woman band. It is also an invocation of the voices of the dead. What began as a secret project of spontaneous monologues for my dead dog, Inka, slowly became a string of musical recordings of improvised melodies.

I read, and I read by reading books and writing at the same time. It makes me a bad reader, but a great dreamer. And so I stitch and dream together other people's words and my own with the freedom of pop music - or perhaps more and more a free-form kind of pop music." -Jenny Hval

Norwegain Sussurus

On this the sixth Skandinavi show we traveled to Norway figuratively speaking of course. The first thought going into many people's head when they hear Norwegain music is death metal and electronica, but we attempted to stay away from for the most part. With artist like Hanne Hukkelberg and Sondre Lerche, we took a look at another very interesting but less recognized style of music from norway which relies on its jazz roots. Also included were artist like Silje Nes and Ane Brun that exemplified some wonderful women vocals on top of some excellent folkish music. Hopefully this has been a helpful in showing the many different facets of the norwegian music scene and also remember to tune in next week from 5-6 pm on Tuesday for more exciting Scandinavian music.

Featured Artist : Kemialliset Ystävät

Kemialliset Ystävät is psychedelic folk band from Finland. Following the Finish theme of the week Kemialliset Ystävät represents the general style of the Finish music scene, somewhat enjoyable and at the same time delirious noise interpretations that still hold folk styling at their root. The end result is a very enigmatic music genre that Finland is famous for. Kemialliset Ystävät has released several albums since they formed in 1995, each particular album defining its own style of experimentation. The band itself is somewhat ambiguous because the group members are ever changing many are parts of the Fonal Label, which itself is the label for Kemialliset Ystävät. Their collaborations include work with Islaja and Avarisl, which are other bands played for our Finish show this week. For the band website, which is actually just a bunch of strange collage like pictures visit this site: http://www.kemiallisetystavat.com/

FINLANDIA

This week Djorik and I covered the region of Finland. Most of the artists were on a great record label called Fonal Records.

Finland's best known for their 'New Weird Finland' psych-folk scene and it definitely brings a lot to the Scandinavian region. We also threw in some electronic from the area, some songs Djorik likes to call glorified video games tracks... I think that describes them well. Very dramatic and building... like a lot of the music we played, just with extra beeps thrown in. Anywayss, here's what you heard tonight:
